About Starling Power

A Tanzanian company, founded in Arusha in 2025.

Where Starling Power Comes From

Starling Power co-founders Dr Bernie Jones and Osidai Saning'o in Arusha, Tanzania

Co-founded by the directors of OMASI and Smart Villages after more than a decade of collaboration, Starling Power combines the deep, rooted community understanding of a local Tanzanian NGO with the broader developmental expertise and experience of a UK research organisation.

The company has spun out of more than a decade of applied research, system design, and field implementation led by Smart Villages, in close partnership with Tanzanian organisation OMASI. This work has been funded by the UK Government and international partners, and has delivered robust solar and hybrid energy systems across Sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia.

Two Organisations, One Company

Smart Villages

Smart Villages was developed from a seven-year grassroots research programme to understand why development projects fail. In the past five years, it has run more than 25 international development projects, worth more than £5.2m and impacting over 600,000 individuals.
